History Thursday: Saul Bass

bass man with the golden arm

I’m sure you’re already familiar with Saul Bass—you know, the guy who made the Psycho poster, the Exxon, AT&T, United Airlines  logos (among so many others). Bass’s work appears in a collection of Master Portfolios hosted by Graphis, The International Journal of Visual Communication. (Note: I also noticed on their website that they are accepting applications for web design, design production, and design editorial interns)

You’ve probably already been introduced to Code Academy—maybe you’ve mastered all of the lessons there already. But if you’re new to web design, or if you’re really more of a graphic designer with only a little bit of interest in web design, you should at least know that Code Academy exists. This is where you can go online, for free, to learn code in small increments. It’s small bits of information in just about the amount of time you can keep your head in the game.

Are you an art or design student newly enrolled in a typography course? This “student” is younger than you by, oh, about 16 years or more! Designer Dad Teaches His Two-Year Old Daughter About Typography With Edible ABCs is from my archive of stuff I’ve been planning to share but haven’t quite had the time (I have twins now who are soon going to be learning typography with edible type themselves, now that I’ve learned from this designer daddy). Looking for a practice homework assignment? Try making a few letters from your favorite foods.
