Paula Scher began her career with a passion for designing without the type face Helvetica. A graphic design and typographic specialist who now works at Pentagram, NYC, Scher is a significant contributor to the field.

I’ve always felt a sense of play and looseness in her work, so it was not surprising to hear her speak about the role of play and its affect on serious design in her TED talk, where she says “The best way to accomplish serious design is to be totally and completely unqualified for the job.”

I first saw Paula Scher speak at Art Center, Pasadena, promoting her book, Make It Bigger.The book is inspirational and a good gift choice for a recent design graduate. In class I also show Ms. Scher speaking in the short documentary on Hillman Curtis’ site.
